Hadleigh Temple Cottages, Salvation Army.

Location Hadleigh, Essex

Davis Construction was tasked with renewing the Hadleigh Community HQ for The Salvation Army. The 20-week project was 100% funded by donations from the community, with the goal of bringing life back to the building and reinstating it as a centre for public engagement.

Project In Detail.

The Salvation Army asked Davis Construction to replace their old cladded ‘cottages’ with an all-new energy-efficient building that maintained the character of the original. The work took place over a 20-week period and had a budget of £300,000.

As part of our ongoing commitment to quality, the site was registered under the Considerate Constructors Scheme, with all waste from the site monitored to report how much was recycled and how much went to landfill. We also had a timelapse camera installed so that locals could keep up to date with our progress on a daily basis.

The work began in July with the demolition of the old cottages. We then went on to construct the steel frame, completed with a Metsec SFS infill walling. Sliding sash windows were added and the external walls were timber clad and painted white to achieve the character of the original building, along with the construction of the timber truss roof with slate tiles. Upon completion of these major works, we finished the project with all new power, lighting and security systems, as well as new boilers and radiators.

One challenge we knew we had to account for was managing the extremely tight site on a busy road. This meant that attention to detail during the planning phase of the project was critical. In addition, every day many people use the nearby Hadleigh Temple as a church and community centre, including the elderly and vulnerable. Our vigilant approach to health and safety meant that all work was completed safely and successfully.
